Patricia Denys
The California-based artist and photographer Patricia Denys received a grant to process film of her work, “The Rendered.” She writes:
The work addresses the multitude of animals we use for food, labor, science, and in the public-display industry, and how they are disregarded after death; or rendered literally and symbolically. My work focuses on the dichotomies that exist between society’s perception of, and the reality of, animals in containment, such as in factory farms, and the public-display industry, such as the plight of Tilikum, the orca held hostage at SeaWorld. In addition my interest is in regards to society’s views on animals and women and how they are viewed and marketed as meat. I work to expose issues animals face in their lives with emphasis on what is commonly hidden or ignored.
As a result of her grant, Patricia was able to process a lot of her film backlog, assisting with her archive in order to continue her work. Currently, Patricia teaches and spends time on Animal Culture magazine, where she is the creative director and which covers all issues related to animals. Animal Culture as been awarded 4 Addy Awards over the past 3 years from the American Advertising Association.
