Charles Bergen is a Washington, D.C.–based sculptor and craftsman. He writes:

As an artist I am particularly intrigued by wildlife that lives in, on, or near the water. While my art is figurative, as well as abstract, much of my work focuses on “water” wildlife such as seals, walruses, dolphins, and all manner of fish. In addition, my repertoire includes sculptures of dinosaurs, bears, owls, cats and other creatures. Whatever the subject matter, I enjoy working in simplified forms that capture the essence of the animal and readily engage the viewer. The CAF grant enabled me to spend time researching and studying endangered species in my area. That knowledge then helped me in executing a number of projects, including these.
