Winnie Cheche

CAF awarded a grant to Winnie Cheche for her project, “Whose Park? Whose Animals?”
“Whose Park? Whose Animals?” is a six-part digital series examining the ethical dimensions of wildlife tourism at Nairobi National Park, one of the world’s few urban wildlife sanctuaries. At its core, the project asks a pointed question: Who truly “owns” the lives of the animals within the park, and at whose expense are they “managed”? Winnie’s research will be grounded in fieldwork, drawing on interviews with at least ten stakeholders—park rangers, veterinary staff, tourism workers, and local community members. Particular attention is given to Nairobi’s youth, who largely encounter wildlife through media and advertising rather than direct engagement, and who stand to inherit these complex conservation systems.
Winnie Cheche is a young environmental activist based in Nairobi, Kenya. She is the communication director at Kenya Environmental Action Network, where she uses her skills to raise awareness about climate change and its effects on poorer nations and communities.
