On September 21st, 2018, Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat and many other books, gave the first Annual Tom Regan Memorial Lecture at North Carolina State University. This event commemorated the work of CAF co-founder Tom Regan, who was on the philosophy faculty at NC State for over 34 years. Entitled “Animal Ethics and Contemporary Politics,” Adams’ lecture argued that animal philosophy and theory decenter the human and question and challenge white privilege, male privilege, patriarchy, xenophobia, and “American exceptionalism.”

Michael Pendlebury, Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at NCSU, which co-sponsored the lecture with CAF, welcomed the assembly, and CAF Board Member and professor of philosophy Mylan Engel introduced Carol Adams. Inviting the author of The Sexual Politics of Meat to give the inaugural lecture was particularly apt, since it was for research on an early draft of that book that CAF had given a grant in 1988.

Over 150 people attended the lecture, including students, faculty, and members of the community. To watch a recording of the full lecture, including introductions and the question-and-answer session, click here. On display outside the lecture hall was a table featuring some of the many items contained in the Tom Regan Animal Rights Archive at NCSU. To watch a brief overview of the lecture, click here.
