Martin Rowe

Martin has been engaged with the animal advocacy movement for thirty years. A graduate of Oxford and New York universities, in 1994, he co-founded Satya: A Magazine of Vegetarianism, Environmentalism, Animal Advocacy and Social Justice. For five years, he worked at Continuum Publishing Company, the publishers of The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol J. Adams and An Unnatural Order by Jim Mason, among many other animal advocacy titles. In 1999 he co-founded Lantern Books (1999), and subsequently the non-profit Lantern Publishing & Media (2020), where he published scores of books on veganism and animal advocacy. He is the author of The Polar Bear in the Zoo: A Reflection, The Elephants in the Room: An Excavation, and The Animals Are Leaving Us (with photos by Jo-Anne McArthur), among several other works. In addition to his work at CAF, he has ghostwritten over twelve titles, and is currently also engaged in the Vegan America Project for Brighter Green. Before becoming Executive Director, Martin was the co-vice president of the CAF board for five years. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Encouraging and Engaging Students and Graduates

Since 2019, CAF has employed students and graduates from animal and environmental studies programs at NYU, and from Columbia College’s Navab Fellow Internship Program, which allows “students to explore potential career paths, gain essential professional skills, and expand personal networks in preparation for life after graduation.” These indivduals have conducted many interviews with our grantees and helped with our communications. They are:

  • 2025: Alysse Swann and Ansah Akhtar, who are involved with CAF’s ongoing oral history project, and Alika Tandon Vieira, who is writing and proofing material for CAF.
  • 2024: Laura Alvear-Roa, who produced an exquisite video on the work of Isa Leshko, winner of the 2023 Nancy Regan Arts Prize.
  • 2023: Tymesha-Elizabeth Kindell (who conducted a webinar with 2022 grantee Lauren Strohacker and 2021 grantee Patrick Fuery, interviewed 2023 grantee Sondra Jackson-Opoku, co-wrote an article with Gauri Karsala on 2023 grantee Kittie Mae Morris; and Gauri Kasarla, who interviewed 2019 grantees Gautam Sondi and Nirupama Sarma, 2020 grantee Nathaniel Otjen, 2023 grantees Just Wondering . . , 2017 grantee Jane O’Hara, and 2023 grantee Namita Kandel.
  • 2022: Victoria Reshetnikov, who edited and compiled videos of Sue Coe, recipient of the 2022 Nancy Regan Arts Prize, interviewed 2023 grantee Rebecca Shen, and artists and CAF grantees Suzy Gonzalez and Claude Jones; and Brooke Rucker, who interviewed artist Leslie Ruckman, 2022 and 2023 grantee Jusep Moreno, and wrote a reflection on her grandfather, CAF co-founder Tom Regan. 
  • 2021: Makenna Cherry, who profiled CAF grantee and filmmaker Marisa Miller Wolfson; and Mary Qiu, who conducted an interview with CAF grantees filmmaker Liz Marshall and Jasmin Singer and Mariann Sullivan of Our Hen House, on the occasion of the 600th episode of their podcast.
  • 2020: Vivian Qiu and Isabel Schmidt, who working remotely from New Zealand and Seattle, respectively. Isabel interviewed Turkish academic Ayten Alkan (a 2017 CAF grantee); while Vivian profiled CAF grantees “scienartist” Gal Nissim, poet Donald Vincent, visual artist Colleen Plumb, and broadcaster Yuan-Chih Lung
  • 2019: Aoi Nakazawa and Chynna Lake, who helped us with our social media.
